Centre for Learning And Design

CLAD, the Bendigo Pottery Centre for Learning and Design, is a large, fully equipped ceramic studio sitting within Bendigo Pottery’s extensive manufacturing facility.   Under the guidance of Creative Director Damon Moon, CLAD is dedicated to developing the careers of emerging potters and ceramic artists through mentorship, skills development and a comprehensive network of connections within the art and design industries.

CLAD will offer the following opportunities for ceramic practitioners of all skill levels:

  • Regular short courses in wheel throwing and other studio techniques for novice to intermediate  levels
  • Master classes with leading national and international practitioners
  • Short and medium term studio residency and visiting internships
  • Industry consultancy to product and interior designers and architects
  • Research and  advocacy
  • A one year full time Studio Development Program for potters, designers and ceramic artists to develop their skill level, create new bodies of work or transition into professional practice.

CLAD Facilities:          

Studio facilities include throwing, mould making, slip casting, hand building, jolley, extruding, drying room, glazing, range of electric and gas kilns.

Factory facilities which are available include: jolleys, plate machine, cup machine, bowl machine, and RAM press.

Beginners Wheel Throwing Classes (adults)

Term 1, 2019

6 weeks, one 2.5 hour session per week


Class 1:                        Tuesday 19 February to Tuesday 26 March               9.30am - 12.00pm

Class 2:                        Tuesday 19 February to Tuesday 26 March               1.00pm – 3.30pm

Class 3:                        Thursday 21 February to Thursday 28 March             6.00pm - 8.30pm       

These new 6 week courses are designed to provide a foundation for working on the potter’s wheel. Designed primarily for beginners, experienced tutors will teach the fundamental skills including centring the clay, steps involved in throwing cylinder and bowl shapes, turning and trimming. For those with some wheel throwing experience, you will be able to expand your knowledge and skills. The final class will involve glazing and firing of pots.

Student numbers will be kept to a maximum of 8 per class, allowing plenty of time for each participant. Cost of the 6 week term is $375 payable on booking.

Each student will have an unlimited amount of clay to work with. Included in the course fee is a limit of 2.5 kg of finished work for firing. Students can make and fire work above this limit but will be charged a fee by weight over the included 2.5 kg.

Please choose Class time carefully as we will not be able to change once booked. The classes run at the same time each week for 6 weeks.
